Surgical Skin Cancer Treatments
Surgical treatment may be recommended when a skin cancer needs to be removed. Depending on the diagnosis and clinical findings, treatment may include:
- Excision of skin cancer
- Excisional biopsy
- Removal of suspicious lesions
- Appropriate wound closure
- Wound reconstruction where required
Surgery is commonly used to treat many basal cell carcinomas and squamous cell carcinomas. It may also be recommended for other skin cancers depending on their characteristics and location.
Non-Surgical Skin Cancer Treatments
Some selected lesions may be suitable for non-surgical treatment. These approaches can be considered when clinically appropriate and may be used for certain superficial skin cancers, precancerous changes or areas of sun-damaged skin.
Depending on the diagnosis, treatment may include:
- Photodynamic Therapy (PDT)
- Cryotherapy
- Prescription topical treatments
- Other appropriate field treatments
The suitability of a non-surgical approach depends on the type and characteristics of the lesion, its location and your individual circumstances.
How Is the Right Treatment Chosen?
There is no single treatment suitable for every skin cancer. Your doctor will consider several factors before recommending an appropriate approach, including:
- Type of skin cancer
- Size and depth
- Location and surrounding skin
- Previous treatment
- Pathology findings
- Number of lesions
- Your individual circumstances
Where appropriate, a biopsy or pathology assessment may be recommended before definitive treatment is selected.
Ongoing Skin Cancer Surveillance
Being treated for one skin cancer does not remove the possibility of developing another. Continuing to monitor your skin, attending recommended skin checks and protecting your skin from excessive sun exposure remain important.
